The Habitable World Observatory (HWO) has been selected as the concept for NASA’s next Flagship mission planned for the 2040s.
As its name suggests, HWO is optimized for the search and characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets by detecting biosignatures (such as ozone in the UV spectrum). However, it will also serve as a general-purpose observatory, much like Hubble, revolutionizing our understanding across all fields of astrophysics. As a space laboratory, LAM must explore potential participations in this mission.
We invite all scientific and technical staff to an informational meeting about this mission.
The agenda will cover the scientific objectives, the national context, and programmatic aspects of the mission. We will also discuss the numerous technological challenges posed by HWO (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2408.07242) and the ongoing activities at LAM regarding possible contributions, both in science and instrumentation.
