The FornaX XMM-Euclid Heritage project

Observations by the XMM Heritage programme in the Euclid Fornax deep field began in 2024 and will be completed in 2027. This will achieve unrivalled sensitivity over 10 deg2 in X, optical and IR; around fifty scientists are involved in the project.
In this seminar, we will present the scientific motivations behind the project. It will be an opportunity to review the results of its predecessor, the XMM-XXL survey, and to examine the issue of detecting and identifying galaxy clusters in X-rays (on average 1 collected photon per minute!). We will also see how it is now possible to obtain cosmological constraints from clusters without calculating their mass. This will lead us to discuss some recent developments in the implementation of artificial intelligence in cosmological inference.

Le projet Heritage XMM-Euclid FornaX

Les observations du programme Heritage XMM dans le champ profond Euclid Fornax ont débuté en 2024 et s’achèveront en 2027. On atteindra alors une sensibilité inégalée sur 10 deg2 en X, optique et IR; une cinquantaine de scientifiques se sont associés au projet.
Nous exposerons dans ce séminaire les motivations scientifiques du projet. Ce sera l’occasion de revenir sur les résultats de son prédécesseur, le survey XMM-XXL et de se pencher sur la problématique de la detection et de l’identification des amas de galaxies en X (en moyenne 1 photon collecté par minute !). Nous verrons également comment il est maintenant possible d’obtenir des contraintes cosmologiques à partir des amas sans calculer leur masse. Ceci nous conduira à évoquer quelques developments recents sur l’implantation de l’intelligence artificielle dans l’inference cosmologique.
