 Atelier de validation planétaire

The exploitation of space missions CoRoT and Kepler dedicated to the search for exoplanets by the transit method has led to a new type of problem : many candidates are detected, but it is extremely difficult to establish their planetary nature by a measurement of their mass, because either the parent star is too faint or the amplitude of the radial velocity signature is too small to be detected with current instruments. For these candidates, the concept of validation has been devised, that permits establishing the candidate as a real planet if the probabilities greatly favor the planetary scenario over the false positive ones. The validation process depends on numerous models, priors and assumptions on stellar and planetary occurrence rates, galactic structure, etc.

A thorough set of diagnostics is deployed to confirm the planetary nature of the companion candidate. Other exoplanets surveys using direct imaging, microlenses or astrometry, also suffer from contamination by various stellar configurations. If the concept of planet validation may be less mature for these techniques, it can be expected that some of the diagnostic tools and statistical methods of comparison will be identical. This problem becomes more important with instruments that are increasingly sensitive.

The “Planet Validation” Workshop proposes to ask fundamental questions and evaluate the best answers in this context. The stakes are high, as hundreds of Kepler candidates will be validated instead of firmly confirmed, and soon those detected by SPHERE, GPI, GAIA, ESPRESSO, EUCLID and maybe PLATO and TESS... The aim of the meeting is to bring together experts in data analysis, statistics, different planet detection methods, and stellar and galactic models and to discuss the choices made by the recently developed planet validation tools.

The workshop will take place over three days and will be open to a maximum of 40 participants. The following areas will be covered :

  • Observations and data modeling : transit light curves, radial velocities, spectrophotometry, spectroscopic data, high contrast imaging, astrometry, microlenses light curves.
  • Fit methods and model comparison : quantitative comparison of different scenarios, exploring large and intricate parameter spaces.
  • Stellar multiplicity : multiplicity fraction, characteristics of multiple systems (period, mass ratios, age, ...).
  • Planetary systems : planet occurrence rate, and statistics.
  • Galactic structure : stellar density in the direction of the line of sight, reddening.

The participants are expected to submit an abstract on these topics for oral/poster presentation before the deadline.

The workshop will be held in the auditorium of Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille in May 13th to 15th, 2013.
