CNRS-LAM, ONERA and INAF are organizing a scientific workshop on Wavefront Sensing in the VLT/ELT area, the 3rd to 5th October 2016 in Marseille - le Pharo (

This workshop will be an opportunity for young students (doc and post-doc) to present their on-going work and to exchange with senior scientists. Each session will be introduced by a dedicated review presentation, and the focus will be given to open issues in the field, with dedicated time for discussions.

Wavefront sensing is the very heart of any adaptive optics system. The performance and characteristics of the wavefront sensing [WFS] often reflect the ultimate performance of the AO system itself. The diversification of scientific needs and AO concepts in the past years has pushed for innovative ideas in this field. The hunt for the ultimate sensitivity (hence the best sky coverage) or for the ultimate accuracy (hence the best contrast for planet detection) are two of the most obvious examples. WFSing is also very linked to detector technologies and these latter often drive the scientific and conceptual development.

At the dawn of ELT instrumentation, it is the perfect timing to propose a scientific workshop on the subject. The idea is to go from the main scientific drivers and high level specifications for wavefront sensing (in both extreme AO and laser assisted wide field AO) down to component itself (detector technology).

The purpose of this 3 days Workshop is to put altogether international specialists of AO, wavefront sensing, detector and post-processing in order to share ideas and to move forward in our understanding of the ultimate performance and the practical implementation of existing devices.

The workshop will address the following problematic (non-exhaustive list)

  • WFS strategies :
    What are the aberrations to be measured, how, where ...
    WFS calibration strategy and online optimisation
    IR vs VIS Wavefront Sensing
    WFS for visible wavelength instrumentation : sensing rate and sampling, vibration measurement and control at milliarcsec level
  • Classical/Extreme AO WFS
    First stage WFS (SCAO / XAO) - new concepts, new ideas, new implementations
    Post focal WFS / dark holes
    Dealing with telescope specific defects (residual cophasing, pupil segmentation by telescope spiders / Low Wind Effects etc ...)
  • Wide FoV WFS
    Open loop specificities
    Low-Order WFS and truth sensing
  • From concepts to components : recent advanced in detector technologies (VIS and IR)

Abstracts Submission

The submission and registration procedure is the following :

Send a email to in which you will indicate if you want to
1) register only
2) submit an oral presentation
3) submit a poster presentation

in the last two cases please add
1) the title of the communication
2) a short abstract (500 words max)
3) a long abstract (pdf format) of 3 pages maximum
both abstracts will be posted on our dedicated web page

The deadline for both submissions and registrations is the 2 of September

Please note that the number of place will be limited to 80 max (room capacity).

Invited Speakers

We are planning on having a large representations of students, so for each session the idea would be to have a review talk that introduces the topic, and potentially highlight the main challenges. The role of the invited speakers will be to do this introduction, chair the corresponding session, and lead the potential discussions. At the end of each session, a dedicated time for discussions will be included.

The meeting will start around noon, Monday the 3rd, and finish around mid-afternoon Wednesday the 5th.


The workshop is co-organized by LAM / ONERA and INAF, with financial support from CNRS-ASHRA, INAF, OSU Pythéas, ONERA, FOCUS, FP7-OPTICON ANR WASABI, AMIDEX EXTRA and ADONI. Students that would like to receive a financial support are asked to send a 2 pages summary of their work, and a brief description of the topics there are interested in for this workshop, as well as what they would like to present.
