 PhD Programme

The Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille of the Aix-Marseille Université /CNRS invites applications for its PhD programme.


This page contains the proposed projects, to be started in October/November 2020.



The Laboratory has major research and training facilities in observational, instrumental and theoretical astronomy, and is a strong participant in space and ground based instrumentation and astronomical surveys.

Positions are available in all the research areas in which the Laboratory is active. These include cosmology and large scale structure, galaxy formation and evolution, star formation and interstellar medium, stars and extrasolar planets, solar system and planetary formation, and astronomical optics and instrumentation.

Applicants must have a solid physics background, and a Master degree or equivalent by the time the position is begun. Previous research experience and skills will be important criteria for the selection. The PhD positions are not restricted by nationality.

Working languages in the Laboratory are French and English; support for French language courses is available (for free).

The fellowships are available for 3 years.

Whatever the project, the application procedure is the following:

  • FIRST: Students interested by one or more projects have to contact the PhD supervisor(s)
  • After discussion, students have to send their application directly to the supervisor(s).
    Candidates applying to several projects have to specify priorities in their choice.

The planned deadlines for applications (please visit the page again for updates) are :

  • March 15th for CNES funded subjects
  • April 1rst for Doctoral School
  • May vary for funded project. Contact the supervisor asap.

Projects proposed for a grant from the Doctoral School ED 352

Application package MUST include:

  • CV
  • Cover letter
  • 2 letters of recommendation (internship supervisor, formation chair)
  • Copy of diploma
  • Marks and ranking since the first University years

Process : Application deadline is April 1rst. Please contact the supervisor well in advance with respect to this date. Only one student per project will be selected by LAM. By the end of April, six two-person teams (student+supervisor) will be selected by the LAM for funding request to the doctoral school (ED). The LAM selection will be discussed at the Scientific Council. ED 352 will then make the final decision, after interviews (usually in May) and selections (usually end of May).
